Apprenticeships are integral to Houghton International. For over 35 years they have ensured a continuous flow of new skills and talent into the business. We see great value in apprenticeships, and that’s why we’re passionate about supporting them, in the business, in our sector, and in wider industry.
When customer EDF Renewables asked if they could bring their wind turbine technician apprentices to our site to learn more about rotating machines, we were more than happy to say yes! Houghton International provides repair, maintenance and life extension of wind turbine generators for EDF Renewables, alongside services for a wide range of rotating machines, including motors and pumps for a UK and global customer base. A site visit provided the perfect opportunity for the apprentices to see a selection of wind generators up close and personal, including two 3MW generators from EDF’s Fallago Rig wind farm in our workshop for refurbishment. We were also able to show them a large direct drive wind generator from the Faroe Islands, helping to illustrate the scope of different shapes, sizes and specifications of generators in operation in the wind power industry.
Sales Director Chris Robson led the tour, giving the apprentices an insight into the day to day workings of an electro mechanical repair shop and the various industries that we serve, including manufacturing, transport and utilities. The apprentices were able to speak first-hand to the engineers that provide these services day-to-day, and better understand the different elements of generator repair and maintenance, including overhauls, rewinds and testing.
We were delighted to host the apprentices and we wish them all the best for their future careers.
