New apprentices ‘generate’ skills at Houghton International

We have welcomed three new apprentices and three trainees to our 85 strong team based in Walker, Newcastle.

Sam Gibson, Connor Lohan and Joe Rowan have joined Houghton International as Advanced Engineering apprentices. Over the four year Electro Mechanical Apprenticeship programme they will attend Tyne Met College alongside learning from experienced engineers on site, supporting the team as they develop their engineering skills.

Ryan Hutton, James Boon and Garry Bone have also joined the company as trainees, undertaking a Level 2 NVQ in Performing Manufacturing Operations. They will work alongside staff in the coil manufacturing division, manufacturing high voltage coils for use in machines all around the world.

The new additions follow on the back of the permanent appointment of five former apprentices who completed their training this and have taken on full time roles.

Michael Mitten, CEO of Houghton International, commented: “Investing in the future of our business is important in order to ensure we have the skills to continue to grow. Former apprentices have gone on to take on various roles within the company, including Heads of Division and Sales Managers.

“At Houghton International everyone matters and we are committed to providing a high quality education offering apprentices a hands on working environment, the opportunity to earn while they learn and work towards becoming an integral part of the company’s future.”

Apprentices currently make up 13% of the workforce at Houghton International, working alongside skilled electro mechanical engineers they assist in the repair, maintenance and life extension of electro mechanical assets servicing a broad range of sectors including power generation, renewables, industrial, water, oil and gas, marine and rail.

A number of the trainees were selected on the back of successful work experience placements and upon completion of the programmes there will also be opportunities of on-going future personal development to include HNC/HND qualifications, in addition to career progression within Houghton International.
