IPS Newcastle Wins AEMT Sustainable Engineering Award 2024

We are proud and humbled to announce that IPS Newcastle (formerly Houghton International) has been recognised with the Sustainable Engineering Award at the 2024 AEMT Awards. This achievement reflects the collective efforts of our team, customers, and partners to embed sustainability into everything we do.

Building on the recognition we received earlier this year at the NEAA Environmental and Sustainability Awards, this honour encourages us to continue working toward a more sustainable future for our industry.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

We believe that by focusing on repair over replacement, improving efficiency, and extending the life of critical assets, we can reduce waste, conserve resources, and help mitigate environmental impact.

Over the years, we’ve taken meaningful steps to align our operations with sustainability goals:

  • Measuring Our Carbon Footprint: Partnering with Newcastle University, we became the first SME in our sector to measure and disclose our carbon footprint across all three scopes. This transparency has provided valuable insights and helped us identify ways to reduce emissions.
  • Repair vs. Replace Research: Our study demonstrated the environmental benefits of repair, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 40.9% for motors and 37.4% for generators. Sharing these findings with our customers and peers has encouraged others to consider repair as a more sustainable choice.
  • Innovation for Renewable Energy: From pioneering solutions like waterproof coil insulation for tidal generators to rewinding direct-drive wind turbines, we are proud to support the clean energy transition in practical and impactful ways.

A Shared Achievement

This award is not just a reflection of what we’ve accomplished—it is also a reminder of the work that lies ahead. Sustainability is a collective responsibility, and this recognition belongs to everyone who has played a role in our journey.

Whether through innovative facility upgrades, such as energy-efficient systems and recycling initiatives, or by creating opportunities for customers to make more sustainable decisions, our focus has always been on working together to achieve meaningful change.

We also recognise the importance of knowledge-sharing in driving broader progress. By openly sharing our research and findings with customers, industry peers, and working groups like Net-Zero initiatives, we hope to inspire others to take steps toward sustainability, no matter how small.

Looking Ahead

Winning the AEMT Sustainable Engineering Award motivates us to keep improving. We are committed to continuing our work, listening to feedback, and finding new ways to reduce environmental impact while supporting our customers in their own sustainability journeys.

Thank you to the Association of Electrical and Mechanical Trades (AEMT) for this recognition, and to our customers and team members for their ongoing support. Together, we can make a real difference—not just within our business but across industries.

This award reflects the hard work of our team and the shared vision we have with our customers and partners to prioritise sustainability. We are grateful for this recognition and will continue striving to do better.

Emma Donald, Marketing Manager, IPS Newcastle
