Project: 3.3kV Ex Motor Overhaul

The challenge

INEOS awarded Houghton International with the job to overhaul an Ex certified, 3.3kV GEC booster pump motor from a petrochemical processing plant in Teesside. Operating in an explosive environment, any repair or overhaul work to the motor required specialist personnel and working practices.

The solution

The motor required a wide-ranging overhaul including replacement parts where necessary, Ex checks, cleaning and a test run. Working in its IECEx accredited workshop, Houghton International’s fully qualified team replaced the bearings and gaskets, balanced the rotor and conducted Ex checks and Baker tests.

With the overhaul initially having no specific turnaround time, INEOS contacted Houghton International to move up the timescales of the job and therefore required the overhauled motor back to their site sooner than expected. Houghton International was able to provide reassurance that this request could be accommodated by utilising its flexible labour and allocating the necessary resources.

The Results

Being IECEx accredited signifies that Houghton International’s facilities have been independently assessed and found to have appropriate equipment and competent staff, therefore demonstrating its capability to safely repair and overhaul equipment used in explosive atmospheres such as this GEC booster pump motor.

Houghton International has engineers available 24/7 and therefore was able to allocate shifts to ensure that work was being carried out on the motor around the clock, in order for it to be delivered back to the customer within the required timescale.

Having had the necessary checks and testing carried out, the overhauled motor was returned to site on schedule allowing it to operate safely in its Ex environment.

Being an IECEx accredited service provider and having the necessary personnel to carry out such a repair, Houghton International were awarded the job to overhaul a motor which would be operating in an explosive environment. We were extremely pleased with the flexibility shown by the team at Houghton International to meet our timescales and the quality of work carried out.
