The challenge
As part of its expansion to a new facility, a large industrial company required electrical installation services. The move took place during the Covid-19 pandemic and required a dedicated team led by an electrical engineering specialist to configure the electrical infrastructure to suit the new requirements
Houghton International’s in-house electrical services team carried out the design, installation, testing and certification of new electrical infrastructure, reconfiguring existing supplies as necessary to provide a cost-effective solution to meet the company’s needs, adhering to all current regulations.
The solution
Houghton International’s in-house project management team devised a robust plan to complete the project within the challenging timescale given.
To begin with, the existing electrical infrastructure was mapped out and assessed against the business’s needs for a lean, flexible workspace. Electrical tests were then used to locate, identify and correct any faults found in the customer’s electrical systems. The existing wire and cable systems (up to 400 amps) were then redesigned and upgraded in line with the customer’s needs, keeping costs low and reducing lead times.
Lighting across the building, including the offices and factory floor, was upgraded to high efficiency LED systems to improve factory operations, working conditions and save running costs. A number of offices, conference rooms, canteens and other support areas were also created or reconfigured to suit the company’s requirements.
The site operates a number of overhead gantry cranes up to 40 tonnes. The cranes’ control systems were reconfigured, replacing obsolete contactors to prevent hazards such as electrical overloads.
All machinery and test equipment was safely disconnected from the previous site before being installed and configured to the relevant safety standards in the new site. In addition, new facilities were added and safety systems upgraded with the addition of interlocks, warning lights etc.
