Rolls-Royce Case Study - The Transverse Flux Motor (TFM)
The accompanying pictures are of a pioneering coil design
we manufactured in collaboration with Rolls-Royce and the
MoD.
The project is a prototype for a Transverse Flux Motor (TFM)
that's intended for use an innovation in Frigate propulsion
as part of the forthcoming all electric ship.
The Houghton International Solution
This series of four prototype coils required a radical new
design and manufacturing process to be evolved in order to
produce the hot pressed circular shape and unique connections.
Another coil manufacturing company had failed to develop a
working solution, so Rolls Royce came to us and we did the
job.
The coils highlight the agility of our design and manufacturing
abilities and prove our abilities to tackle even the most
challenging of jobs.
The motor worked first time, unlike on previous occasions,
and we hope to help in the development of the TFM as it moves
towards production.
Rolls-Royce Feedback
The team at Houghton International are proud of all the relationships
we've developed with our clients down the years. It's always
a pleasure to receive glowing feedback, and especially from
a client of the standing of Rolls-Royce:
"The diligence, innovation and timeliness applied to
the conduct of this contract has assisted Roll-Royce enormously
in what is an exceptionally challenging development motor
programme and your team's contribution can not be underestimated.
Rolls-Royce would not have any hesitation in working with
your company again in the future."
