The Hi Brid coil is our unique insulation system devised as a direct result of listening to our clients needs.

The Background
In 1990 the trend with manufacturers of large motors and alternators was towards Global VPI. Our repair department at the time were receiving VPI machines with minimal resin content in the centre of the slot portion. This was particularly evident in the Nigerian market where generators are base loaded.
At the same time our innovations team were working closely with
Newage, the world's leading HV generator manufacturer, as they developed their machines for entry into the MV and HV market. We ventured down the route of VPI on their advice but realised very quickly that global VPI, specifically on longer stator cores, was a poor system. Resin was penetrating only so far into the slot, while the end winding proved to be waterproof, although more varnish appeared to be at the bottom of the winding than at the top.

The Houghton International Solution
In conjunction with our client, we agreed to build a prototype comprising a resin rich slot and VPI resin-free outhang, which offered the benefits of both systems. We decided to rotate-cure the winding to encourage even distribution of resin in the end winding. The result was the system, a fully testable and flexible system pre VPI and a fully waterproof system post VPI, which went on to become our best selling insulation system to date.
